I wrote about the greatest Indian in this blog some days before. The voting in the CNN-IBN poll (second phase) started yesterday evening for the 10 short listed Indians out of 50. The first 10, in terms of the vote in the first round, were: 1 Dr. B R Ambedkar 2812494, 2 A P J Abdul Kalam 2391374, 3 Vallabbhai Patel 1091479, 4 Kanshi Ram 252728, 5 A B Vajpayee 67794, 6 Sachin Tendulkar 43627, J R D Tata 29484, 8 Mother Teresa 29456, 9 Rajinikanth 25383, 10 Rajagopalachari 25290, I was under the impression that these 10 personalities would be considered for the second run and the final tally but it is not the case. I don’t know the details of the consideration and the methodology Adopted by the Jury. The ten short listed for the second round of voting are: Lata Mangheskar, B.R. Ambedkar, Vallabbhai Patel, Mother Teresa, APJ Abdul Kalam, RED Tata, A.B. Vajpayee, Indira Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Sachin Tendulkar. It may be observed that Kanshi Ram, Rajnikanth and Rajagopalachari have been taken off from the list and three names who did not figure in the first 10 on the basis of the voting have been included in the short list. It is strange. It means the Jury has over ridding powers to do or undo as they like. In the circumstances, it is yet to be seen as to how fair the poll would be in the caste ridden society and inherit prejudices. Kanshi Ram stood at number 4 in the voted list but his name has been dropped. The announcement made by the organizers of the poll says “The people have spoken and the verdict is out. These are the 10 shortlisted Greats who have been chosen from the list of 50. Cast your vote now for that one Great Indian who you believe is the most iconic, inspirational and impactful of these”. Let us wait and see till the final results are made known on August 15.
I have voted for Ambedkar as the greatest Indian. He secured the highest votes (with considerable margin) as compared to the second in the run APJ Abdul Kalam. I am confident that Ambedkar would still remain in the run and in all probability would make to the top – The Greatest Indian. I think the book “Makers of the Universe “published by the Oxford University has already raised the curtain by listing 100 personalities who influenced the world over 10,000 years. The first name of the list is that of Gautama Buddha and the fourth name is that of B.R. Ambedkar.
Is any book under the title “Makers of the Universe” published by the Oxford University? Though this issue was in public domain during the previous year for quite some time but I could not put my hands on any such publication. My inquiries with some acquaintances in London were also unable throw light on the publication of this Book by Oxford University. If you have seen or read this book, please let me know more about it.
ReplyDeleteIn the civilization of this Land, ‘Tathagat’ – ‘The Exalted One’ is the only one who has born as normal human being and has attained everything which Vedic sages (Rishi-Munis) aspired to achieve. In post Buddha period, spiritual, ethical and moral reconstruction of Indo-Aryan religious texts like Vedas, Upnishads, Sutras and Epics has been done by imbibing the message contained in the Gospel of Tathagat.
In every era there has been epitome of negation of basic rights to depressed and untouchable classes. Indo-Aryan civilization is a great saga of negation of basic rights (civil rights) to these classes of people. In the era of Rama, Shambuka is killed and Bhilini is insulted by Laxman. In the era of Krishna, Eklavya is asked to give his thumb without imparting education. In the era of Guru Ravidas and Kabir Sahib , a Brahmin is imposed as Guru upon them who never imparted any knowledge to them. Vivekananda is inclined to confer divine status on caste. Phule’s movement for mass education is checked by Arya Samajists – the propagators of Aryan culture. Dr. Ambedkar is made to sit outside the classroom in almost 20th Century. He is being insulted even today.
Despite this pathetic situation, a large number of people have come up only due to the resolve of our great forefathers to make India inclusive society based on the pillars of Liberty, Equality, Fraternity and Justice. Efforts with full energy are required to evolve a strategy and put it in practice to expedite attainment of these ideals as they only talk of welfare of all human beings.

thanks rajinder. i have not seen the book myself. but my friends told me about the book some months before. recently i read about this in one of the latest issues of the india today magazine ib connection with the the gretest indian poll.
ReplyDeletei fully endorse your views and assessment of ambedkar.
I also endorse views and assessment of Ambassador Ramesh Chander but how come Kashi Ram ji does not figure in the list. One of the reason is that not many people of our community pay any heed to such surveys but it actually impacts on public opinion.

It is clear that Dr Ambedkar is ahead of all the other contestants by leaps and bounds. His votes are even greater than that of all the others combined together. He was also No. 1 in the first round which the owners of the show, the same Brahminic media, conspicuously and cunningly hid from the people by presenting an orderless list of 10 personalities. Now, it is becoming clearer everyday that Dr Ambedkar is and will come out as the Greatest Indian before and after Gandhi. The onus lies on the same Brahminic media and jury to accept this fact humbly and not to use its unwarranted overriding powers like it used in phase 1 to eliminate Kanshi Ram, and present over the trophy of the Greatest Indian to the greatest human being ever on earth after Lord Buddha, the honourable Babasaheb Dr Ambedkar.
Sir, what is your take on 8th july's Satyamev jayate? We are awaiting your blog post on this episode.
