Unfair Treatment to Allama Muhammad Iqbal

I wrote on the subject briefly in my blog when Vice Chancellor of Delhi University supported the idea of taking Allama Iqbal out of the University syllabus. Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh supported removing Allama Iqbal from the political science syllabus, stating that those who "laid the foundation to break India should not

be in the syllabus". The move to drop the Urdu poet, often cited as the initiator of India's partition, was unanimously passed by the academic council in May 2023, urging a focus on national heroes. The decision drew criticism from some who viewed it as a politically motivated attempt to redefine the syllabus, though the administration officially maintains it is aimed at promoting nationalistic fervor.

Yet another such case has come-up. The University of Jammu intends to erase Allama Iqbal from its curriculum. Hasseb Drabu in an article in the Tribune has termed it as. “Reducing a towering mind to a political label is an act unworthy of a university” and wrote, “It is indeed tragic that a university which once hosted this finest post-Partition exponent of Iqbaliyat — the specialized field of research on the poetry and philosophy of Iqbal — should now seek to erase Sir Muhammad Iqbal from its curriculum.”

Allama Iqbal, arguably one of the greatest poets of the subcontinent, traced his roots to the Kashmir valley, a fact he celebrated in his writings. He retained a deep emotional and cultural bondage with Kashmir despite his ancestors — Kashmiri Pandits of the Sapru clan - embraced Islam  three centuries ago and later shifted to Sialkot, a

twin city of Jammu before the partition in 1947. Hasseb Drabu has written, “Jagan Nath Azad, a scholar of rare distinction, must be turning in his grave. It was at the University of Jammu that he wrote eleven books on Muhammad Iqbal, including the authoritative five-volume biography, Roodad-e-Iqbal, and a translation of his magnum opus Javed Nama. Scholars described Azad, a professor at the university, as “Iqbal Academy Incarnate”.”

I am not an academic or a scholar of poetry (Shyari) but a humble ‘Fan’ of Allama Iqbal just by reading his poetry in Devnagri without even understanding many of the nuances of Urdu/Persian poetry. His Shyari (Poetry) in the first phase till mid1930s is full of lofty ideals of nationalism, anti-colonialism, Indian traditions and culture,
egalitarian society and humanism like Rabindranath Tagore. In the second phase, Iqbal tilted towards ‘Two Nation Theory’ and became a proponent of Pakistan which ultimately became a reality. It shall not be held against him, to my mind. I have no intention to visit the political and communal history here. What changed him and his thinking is the subject to be researched and analyzed by the historians and scholars.

He wrote a beautiful Nazm – Taran-e-Hind in 1904 explicitly as a patriotic song for children which become one of the most popular songs of India and was designated as a ‘National song of India’ and rightly so -

saare jahāñ se achchhā hindostāñ hamārā

ham bulbuleñ haiñ is kī ye gulsitāñ hamārā

maz.hab nahīñ sikhātā aapas meñ bair rakhnā

hindī haiñ ham vatan hai hindostāñ hamārā

His Nazm – Naya Shivala is yet another gem which as relevant today as it was before –

aa ġhairiyat ke parde ik baar phir uThā deñ

bichhḌoñ ko phir milā deñ naqsh-e-duī miTā deñ

suunī paḌī huī hai muddat se dil kī bastī

aa ik nayā shivāla is des meñ banā deñ

His ‘Quomi Geet’ sets the cultural aspect of Hindostan that is Bharat in its right perspective –

How much he loved the soil of his country that is Hindostan? It may be felt from his poem – Bache Ki Dua –

Iqbal was not oblivious of the challenges and difficulties before India. I quote from one of his very famous and sagacious Nazm – Tasveere Dard –

Watan Ki Fikar Kar Nadan! Musibat Ane Wali Hai
Teri Barbadiyon Ke Mashware Hain Asmanon Mein

Na Samjho Ge To Mit Jao Ge Ae Hindustanon Walo !
Tumhari Dastan Tak Bhi Na Ho Gi Daston Mein

As I said that I am no authority on Allama Iqbal but I am fully convinced that he was a nationalist to the core and a humanist par-excellence. Some of us may be of the view that he was one of the proponents of Pakistan but he fully recognized the core of the soul of India in his poem – Ram:

इस देस में हुए हैं हज़ारों मलक-सरिश्त

मशहूर जिन के दम से है दुनिया में नाम--हिंद

है राम के वजूद पे हिन्दोस्ताँ को नाज़

अहल--नज़र समझते हैं इस को इमाम--हिंद

There is no point in trying to erase and distort history by blocking Allma Iqbal –

hazāroñ saal nargis apnī be-nūrī pe rotī hai

baḌī mushkil se hotā hai chaman meñ dīda-var paidā

Apology to Dalits for Historic Discrimination for Centuries

Apology to Dalits for Historic Discrimination for Centuries

Nepal’s new government under the leadership of young leader, Balendra Shah which came into power after the Gen – Z Revolution, has decided to tender official apology to Dalits of the country who were made to suffer discrimination and ill-treatment in the caste ridden social setup for centuries. The decision of Nepal has triggered a debate in India and other countries of South Asia as to why the

governments in these countries should not follow suit to assuage the pent-up feelings of the so called Dalits – scheduled castes, socially marginalized sections of the society. Nepal’s decision to offer an official apology to Dalits has prompted similar calls from India, where the community faces similar, if not worse, discrimination. Alisha Rahaman Sarkar has reported in the Telegraph. My motivation to write on the subject arose from a suggestion of one of friends and social activist, Advocate Satpal Virdi. I will try to study and analysis the issue, not as an expert but as a layman, with regard to India that is Bharat, my motherland which is the biggest country in the region with about 20% Dalit population who suffered from the obnoxious caste system of the Hindu hierarchy for many long centuries together. I have taken cue from the article of Alisha Rahaman Sarkar referred to above to make this narrative.

With the decision, the government of Nepal will "formally acknowledge the injustice, discrimination and deprivation of opportunities inflicted on Dalits and historically marginalized communities by the state, society and policy structures". The government said the proposed apology will be followed by measures on social justice, inclusive restoration, and historical reconciliation. Rights activists have welcomed the apology and the historic acknowledgment of generations of caste-based discrimination and exclusion. The Dalit community, which sits at the bottom of the rigid social stratification system, has faced centuries-long severe discrimination across South Asia despite constitutional guarantees. The ground situation is that Dalits live in poverty, with lower literacy rate and persistently low representation in key institutions,

Indian Dalit MP, Chandrashekhar Azad speaking in the Lok Sabha on the subject asked to take moral responsibility for the historical injustice, drawing a comparison with Nepal’s commitment in this regard. "When will this parliament apologies to those discriminated for thousands of years and even today face discrimination and are

forced to fight for basic necessities, such as food, clothing and shelter," he said. The caste system in India dates back thousands of years and is still critical in Indian life and politics, with those at the bottom rung routinely discriminated against. The Indian constitution banned caste-based discrimination in 1950, and successive governments have implemented policies to encourage greater social mobility for the “lower” castes. But across India, particularly outside big cities, the system persists to varying degrees.

With the constitution of India, caste based discrimination has been eradicated and abolished but the system of the laws of Manu remains as we say in Hindi – Jatti Hai Ki Jatti Hi Nahin (Caste does not go). The affirmative actions to empower Dalits – socially marginalized sections of the society in the form of reservations and other actions have helped in the process to lessen the adverse and ill effects of the caste system but these provisions have not delivered in full measure as expected. The main stream of the society who still professes the old and obnoxious rules of the society with regard to caste should come forward and fight the

menace head-on from the front, if we intend to save Bharat. The gesture of apology is just a way or means to add to the sense of empowerment of Dalits with a view to integrate them in the process of bringing about Vikshit Bharat as visualized by our leadership headed by PM Narendra Modi. Nepal has taken the lead and rightly so. There is no harm to be magnanimous in the run up to safeguard and preserve humanity. Many Chandrasekharas are sitting on the fence to jump to fight for the human-dignity as enshrined, thoughtfully, in our constitution given by our forefathers headed by Babasaheb Ambedkar. I am reminded of a couplet of Allma Iqbal -

Sun Ae Ghafil Sada Meri, Ye Aesi Cheez Hai Jis Ko
Wazifa Jaan Kar Perhte Hain Taair Bostanon Mein

(Listen to my call, O imprudent one! This is something which
The birds in gardens are reciting like the daily prayers)

Dr. Ambedkar Foudation

Dr. Ambedkar Foudation

I participated in the March 28 meeting of the General Body of Dr. Ambedkar Foundation (DAF) held at the monumental and prestigious venue – Dr. Ambedkar International Center (DAIC) at New Delhi. The meeting was presided over by the Ex-officio Chairman of the DAF, Dr. Varindra Kumar, Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment. It was my first opportunity to register my attendance at such a meeting as a nominated Member of the DAF. It was a good and firsthand experience to know and understand the work and the functioning of the prestigious and esteemed government outfit established in the name of one of the greatest sons of India, Babasaheb Ambedkar and to promote and carry forward his lofty mission and legacy. Hon’ble Chairman and Minister was ably assisted by the designated senior functionaries of the DAF, Director Manoj Tiwari and the DAIC, Director Akash Patil at the meeting in which Members of the Executive and General Body of the DAF participated with enthusiasm as the followers of Babasaheb Ambedkar, an icon of the society at large particularly the weaker and marginalized sections. It provided me an ample opportunity to renew my association and acquaintances with highly placed personalities; Chairman of National Commission for SCs, Kishore Makwana, Dr. Naresh Chauhan, Prof.

Chaman Lal Banga of Himachal Pradesh, Prof Pramod Mehra of IGNOU, Advocate Mohit Bhardwaj, Ms. Heman Sant, Dr. Dinesh Kumar, Jai Bhagwan Kataria of Haryana among others and also made new friends from various states of the country. It was a beneficial and educative exercise. After the exchange of pleasantries and introductions, Director of DAF, Manoj Tiwari steered and carried the agenda of the meeting successfully and answered the resultant queries and observations by the members. Hon’ble Minister provided opportunity to all the participants to speak briefly and listened with patience. Joining the members, I also thanked Hon’ble Chairman and appreciated the good work being done by the DAF under his stewardship and guidance. I took the opportunity to mention about the proposal on April 14, birthday of Babasaheb Ambedkar, to be declared s International Day of Equality under the aegis of UN not only to recognize and honour Dr. B.R. Ambedkar but also to add further imputes to India’s cultural and soft diplomacy. The proposal is resting with the GOI for the last 10 years. I requested the DAF to kindly lend its valuable support to the proposal as appropriate. My detailed submissions at the meeting are appended to this note for kind perusal. Most of members who spoke said that though the DAF was doing well yet it was felt that there was a need to take it to the grassroots for the benefit and advantage of the common man at large. The nominated members should be involved in the functioning of the DAF with a view to provide much need visibility to the DAF, a premier agency pertaining to our icon, Babasaheb Ambedkar.

Hon’ble Minister concluded the meeting with his brief remarks and thanked the DAF and DAIC functionaries and the participating members for arranging the meeting of the esteemed DAF. The DAF, thoughtfully, gave a plaque brass with an inscribed image of the

statue of Babasaheb Ambedkar adorning the central dome of DAIC, as a befitting Memento to the members and also added a copy of the original text of the Constitution of India to the kit of documents provided. Yet another memorable event of the day, after a sumptuous lunch, was going down and has a photo at the feet of the imposing statue of Babasaheb Ambedkar.

It may be added that Dr. Ambedkar Foundation is an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, established to promote the principles of social justice, equality, and empowerment advocated by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, a prominent social reformer and architect of the Indian Constitution. The following programmes/plans in this regard have been mandated to the DAF:-

·      Dr. Ambedkar Medical Aid Scheme

·      Dr. Ambedkar Study Chairs in Universities

·      Dr. Ambedkar Scheme for celebration of birth/death anniversaries of Great Saints

·      Dr. Ambedkar Foundation National Essay Competition Scheme

·      Dr. Ambedkar National Merit Awards for Secondary and Senior Secondary students

·      Scheme to Encourage and support to inter-caste marriages

Appendix –

Some suggestions for the consideration of Dr. Ambedkar Foundation – Meeting of March 28, 2026

***

1. Resolution for supporting the proposal on declaring April 14, birthday of Babasaheb Ambedkar, as International Day of Equality under the aegis of the UN – The is resting with the GOI (MEA/PMO) since June, 2015. We have been following up the proposal regularly since then. My last blogs on the subject which will give some more information on the issue may be accessed at: https://diplomatictitbits.blogspot.com/2025/08/international-day-of-equality-honouring.html

2. Set of Volumes of Dr. Ambedkar’s Selected Works (Books) to be given to the Nominated Members of the DAF for presentations – All the Nominated Members of the DAF may be given 5 sets of Volumes of Dr. Ambedkar’s Works (Books) published by the GOI. The Members may present these books to the Colleges or Libraries of other prominent institutions of the area. It would tend to provide some much needed acceptance and recognition of the DAF and the Member on one hand and on the other would benefit the public about the legacy of Babasaheb Ambedkar.

3. Celebration of the Constitution Day in all the State capitals under the aegis of DAF – Dr. B. R. Ambedkar was the chief architect of the Constitution of India. His contribution in building the nation of India is unparalleled. GOI has, very thoughtfully, decided to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Constitution Day throughout the year and rightly so. DAF shall not lag behind in joining the celebrations n this regard. DAF should provide for a grant of Rs.5, 00,000/- to each State to celebrate and observe the Day in a befitting manner. The Nominated Members of the DAF should be associated with these celebrations. With this DAF would get better image in the public, to my mind.

4. Resolution to urge and request the GOI and other concerned agencies to include the last speech of Dr. Ambedkar delivered in the Constituent Assembly on November 25, 1949 in the University/College Curriculum – DAF may pass a Resolution to include the last speech of Dr.Ambedkar made in the Constituent Assembly in the university curriculum for the benefit of the younger generations. There could not be two opinions on the fact that it is one of the best speeches ever made in make India that is Bharat the lad of our dreams. It is as relevant today as it was in 1949.

5. Financial support to Ambedkar Bhawans in all districts of India - It has been observed that Amedkar Bhawans, generally, are undergoing financial hardships as the followers of Ambedkar are mostly poor and weak financially. These Bhawans are doing good job in keeping the legacy of the leader alive and functional. DAF may consider supporting them with financial grants to strengthen and streamline their functioning. This gesture would go a long way in providing much needed visibility to the functioning of the DAF and provide a handle to the Nominated Members of the DAF in their respective areas.

6. Inter-caste Marriages – Encouragement and support including employment to the SC partner
