Seeking Blessings of
Spiritual Gurus – International Day of Equality
The Government of PM Narendra Modi is blissfully sleeping on
the proposal of April 14, birth anniversary of Babasaheb Ambedkar as
International Day of Equality. But we will not leave any stone unturned to
realize our goal. They can criticize Ambedkar but they cannot ignore him as
Mahatma Gandhi said about Babasaheb many years before. Ambedkar bounces back
and it will remain so in the years to come. We will ignore this reality at its
own peril.
Keeping with our resolve to pursue the matter with the
Government of India and other stakeholders, I reminded EAM Dr. S. Jaishankar
under intimation to PM Narendra Modi and other important Ministers by letter
dated April 15 followed by a letter dated April 22 to the Chairman of the Forum
of Scheduled Caste MPs and MLAs. I solicited support of many individual MPs and
MLAs through my letter of 27/30 April and wrote to my friends an open letter on
May 8 and invited them to join hands in following up the matter with the
authorities. I also tried to engage both the print and electronic media to
carry the message to the general public but, as expected, they willfully tended
to ignore the issue. The only exception in this regard is the Ambedkar Times
Group of California (USA) under the leadership of Prem Chumber. It is fine. We would continue. I repeat that
the legacy of Babasaheb has the potential to prevail and make its way forward.
It has been proven in the past.
Having engaged the government, political class, the civil
society, I decided to involve the spiritual leadership of the dalits and other
weaker sections of the society, whose mentor and savior Babasaheb Ambedkar was,
and wrote on May 15 to more than 15 Deras and their senior Sants and spiritual
Gurus and requested for their help in spreading the message across to the
government and their followers. The initial response is encouraging in spite of
the
unfortunate fact that most of them don’t have the wherewithal and necessary
secretarial backup. The sleeping lion is required to be woken up. Sant Krishan
Nath of Chaheru Dera spoke to me and committed all due help in pursuing the
proposal on International Day of Equality. My letter of May 15 to the Deras is
appended to this write up.

It goes without saying the spiritual deras, pertaining to
dalit communities, in Punjab are a force to reckon with. But unfortunately they
are a disorganized lot and do not have a clearly defined agenda. Their managements
are still run on traditional norms and not on the pragmatic modern day needs.
The coteries around the Dharm Gurus – Sants do not allow the educated and
experienced people to come near the Karta-Dhartas of the Deras. On the other
hand the educated lot feel side-lined as they are not accustomed to squat on
the floor in the deras and contend themselves with “Jai Gurdev- Dhan Gurdev”
and eat Langars and come back. There is a definite confidence deficit and
communication gap. We need to overcome these ground realities.
I hope that my approach to engage with the deras in pursuing
the proposal on International Day of Equality will fructify in good results and
pave the way to actively involve the spiritual leadership in the community
matters with a clear agenda and final destination to realize the mission of
great Guru Ravidass:

ਸਤਿਕਾਰਯੋਗ ਸੰਤ ਮਹਾਰਾਜ ਜੀ,
ਪ੍ਰਣਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਦ ਅਰਜ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕੇ, ਮੇਰਾ ਨਾਂ ਰਮੇਸ਼ ਚੰਦਰ ਹੈ! ਮੈਂ ਬੂਟਾਂ ਮੰਡੀ ਜਲੰਧਰ ਦਾ ਜੰਮਪਲ ਹਾਂ! ਹੁਣ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੀ ਇਕ ਉੱਚੀ ਨੌਕਰੀ ਤੋਂ ਰਿਟਾਇਰ ਹੋਕੇ ਮੁੜ ਜਲੰਧਰ ਹੀ ਆ ਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ! ਮੈਂ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੀ ਵਿਦੇਸ਼ ਸੇਵਾ (IFS) ਚ ਇਕ ਡਿਪਲੋਮੈਟ ਸਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਇਕ ਰਾਜਦੂਤ (Ambassador) ਦੇ ਔਹਦੇ ਤੇ ਸੀ! ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਕੁਛ ਬਾਬਾਸਹੇਬ ਅੰਬੇਡਕਰ ਦੀ ਬਦੋਲਤ ਅਤੇ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਬਰਗੇ ਮਹਾਪੁਰਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸਦਕਾ ਹੀ ਹੋ ਸਕਿਆ। ਆਪਣੇ ਸਮਾਜ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਛ ਮੋੜਨ ਦੇ ਲਈ, ਕੁਛ ਨਾ ਕੁਛ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾਂ ਹਾਂ!
ਇਸੇ ਸਿਲਸਿਲੇ ਵਿਚ, ਮੈਂ ਜੂਨ 2015 ਵਿਚ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੀ ਵਿਦੇਸ਼ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਸੁਸ਼ਮਾ ਸਵਰਾਜ ਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਖਤ ਲਿਖ ਕੇ ਇਹ ਸੁਝਾਅ ਦਿਤਾ ਕਿ 14 ਅਪ੍ਰੈਲ, ਬਾਬਾਸਹੇਬ ਅੰਬੇਡਕਰ ਦੇ ਜਨਮ ਦਿਨ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਤਰਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਬਰਾਬਰਤਾ ਦਿਵਸ (International
Day of Equality) ਐਲਾਨੀਆਂ ਜਾਵੇ ਅਤੇ ਇਕ ਅਪੀਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਕਿ ਭਾਰਤ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਇਸ ਮਕਸਦ ਲਈ ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਸੰਘੜ੍ਹਣ (UNO) ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਅਰਜੀ ਲਾਵੇ. ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਹਿਜੋਗੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਕੇ, ਤਦ ਤੋਂ ਲੈਕੇ, ਇਹ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਭਾਰਤ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਸਾਡੀ ਗੱਲ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਣਦਿਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਬਾਬਾਸਹੇਬ ਅੰਬੇਡਕਰ ਦਾ ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਕਰੇ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀ ਸੁਖ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਹਿਜੋਗ ਦੇਵੇ.
ਇਸ ਕੰਮ ਵਿਚ ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਸਹਿਜੋਗ ਅਤੇ ਅਸ਼ੀਰਵਾਦ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਨਾ ਕਰਨ ਬਾਸਤੇ ਇਹ ਖਤ ਲਿਖਣ ਦੀ ਸੋਚੀ. ਮੈਂ ਮਾਫੀ ਚਾਉਂਦਾ ਹਨ, ਮਹਾਰਾਜ ਜੀ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ. ਇਸ ਸਿਲਸਿਲੇ ਵਿਚ ਮੈਂ ਅਤੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਹਿਜੋਗੀ ਕਾਫੀ ਕਾਮ ਕਰ ਚੁਕੇ ਹਾਂ. ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਖਤ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਕੁਛ ਲਿੰਕ ਭੇਜ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਹਾਂ ਜੋ ਕਿ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਵਿਚ ਹਨ. ਇਹ ਲਿੰਕ ਖੋਲ ਕੇ ਆਂਪਣੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਪੜੇ-ਲਿਖੇ ਸ਼ਰਧਾਲੂ ਨੂੰ ਕਹਿਕੇ ਸਾਰੀ ਗੱਲਬਾਤ ਤੋਂ ਜਾਣੂ ਹੋਕੇ ਇਸ ਮੁੱਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਤਕ ਭੇਜੋ. ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲਿੰਕ ਵਿਚ ਸਾਰੀ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਹੈ. ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਇਕ ਖਤ ਦਾ ਖਰੜਾ (Draft Letter) ਭੀ ਹੈ. ਇਹ ਖਰੜਾ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਡੇਰੇ ਦੇ ਲੈੱਟਰ ਪੈਡ (Letter Pad) ਤੇ ਉਤਾਰ ਕੇ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੇ ਵਿਦੇਸ਼ ਮੰਤਰੀ
