RSS – It has come a full circle

RSS – It has come a full circle

RSS, in its centenary year 1925 – 2025 has come full circle. The speeches of RSS Elite, including Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat, have set the ball in motion setting the agenda of the New India that is Bharat. Will it turn out to be good or bad? It is hard to say at this juncture as the ideas being floated, in the guise or pretext of traditional wisdom of India as enshrined and stipulated in the ancient Hindu texts, are too controversial which tend to create confusion, to my mind, rather than putting the things in perspective conforming to cardinal principles of the Constitution of India. RSS pretends to be a non-political organization but the ground reality presents something else. The GOI under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi in Delhi does not leave things unsaid and fully back the agenda of its mentors in Nagpur, RSS. Obviously, these loud pronouncements both of the RSS and the GOI, according the political and socio-cultural circles, tend to create doubts and misgivings in the minds of ‘We the people of India’ about the real motivations with regard to the ‘secular, democratic’ edifice of the country and the lofty agenda of ‘Samrasta’ which is propended by RSS with a view to reform the Hindu society and integrate the so-

called dalits, the untouchables which are placed outside the Chatur-Varna Dharma of Manu. I have been a votary of ‘Equitable Social Order’ and the ‘Samrasta Agenda’ of RSS as a born Hindu. I stand for an inclusive and integrated Hindu society under constitutional norms of Constitution of India but not the principles ‘Graded Inequality’ of the Hindu Shastras. As a well-meaning Bhartiya, I list here a couple of inputs which RSS should consider in its centenary year, if they are serious to serve, preserve and save India and transform its socio-cultural order. I write this not as an intellectual or an analyst but as an ordinary citizen –

·     -  Profess and strengthen secular and democratic credentials of the Constitution of India without any reservations and ‘ifs and buts,  without explanatory assertions, in terms of the so called ancient values, which tend to create confusion and doubts in the mind and psyche of the masses belonging particularly to the minority communities and socially weaker sections of the society.

·      Recognize, with due respect and accommodation, minority communities particularly Muslims, if we want to ward off the dangerous of any ‘Na-Pakistan’ to happen again. No one can afford to keep 20% of the population (Muslims) of our country disgruntled and segregated.

·      Hindus society is required to be reformed and transformed to integrate about 25% of the population (SCs and STs) with the main stream of the society as intended in the Samrasta Agenda of RSS. But mere lip service would not do. RSS should take the lead to shed the past, the so called traditional values enshrined in the texts like Manusmiriti. RSS would have to make its stand and thought clear in this regard. There is no harm in doing so: the sooner the better. Why dalits should convert to Islam and Christianity if they get their due space and respect in the Hindu fold in which they were born? I firmly believe that generally one remains in the faith in which one born is born. Conversion is an aberration. No one, I am sorry to say, including Mahatma Gandhi took serious note of the caste system of the Hindus which is a bane of the society at large. RSS should come forward whole heartedly to eradicate caste. The Hindu society would automatically become healthy.

·      How can we do this? My humble suggestions are – Reserve 20% vacancies of Safai Karamcharies (Menial work) for caste Hindus and even Muslims – Encourage inter-caste and even inter-religion marriages by providing for suitable government jobs to one of

spouses – Reserve seats for dalits in RSS run schools and colleges not only for students but also for the teaching faculties – Mandir Purohits/Pujaries should be appointed not on the basis of birth but on the basis of training and education and alsopassing of examinations. These are some of the basic things which may be considered and the Samrasta Agenda should be taken forward.

·      The last but not the least discourage and stop the alleged RSS/BJP cadres from willfully denigrating and undermining role and legacy of Babasaheb Ambedkar, if one goes by the social media, particularly with regard to his status as father of the Indian Constitution. The Andh-Bhagats are beating the drum of B.N. Rau which is not only shameful but immoral. Make RSS’s position clear and loud on Reservations for SCs and STs by reiterating it clearly and advise the alleged Swayamsewaks to desist from spreading falsehoods and half-truths.

I have no doubt in my mind that RSS is a strong and well managed outfit which is here to stay and we are to live with it. I as a non-conformist Hindu wish to see a reformed and transformed Indian society in which ‘We the people of India’ – an inclusive society- live in complete peace and harmony to our mutual advantage and benefit. Many of my friends and readers both in the RSS/BJP circles and also in the opposite camps may not like what I have said. But I say this with conviction for the larger good. With a view to list my state of mind, I quote from Allama Iqbal -

Hawaida  Aaj Apne Zakhm-e-Pinhan Kar Ke Chorun Ga
Lahoo Ro Ro Ke Mehfil Ko Gulistan Kar Ke Chorun Ga

(I will surely exhibit all my hidden wounds today
I will surely change assembly to a garden with blood
mixed tears)

Jalana Hai Mujhe Har Shama-e-Dil Ko Souz-e-Pinhan Se
Teri Tareek Raaton Mein Charaghan Kar Ke Chorun Ga

(I have to light every heart’s candle with hidden pathos
I will surely create bright illumination in your darkness)

Parona Aik Hi Tasbeeh Mein In Bikhare Danon Ko
Jo Muskhil Hai, To Iss Mushkil Ki Asan Kar Ke Chorun Ga

(If stringing these scattered pearls in a single rosary
Is difficult, I will surely make this difficult task easy)

The Bits and Pieces – As I Please – 12

The Bits and Pieces – As I Please – 12

Ekta Diwas – October 31 - National Unity Day (राष्ट्रीय एकता दिवस) is celebrated in India on 31 October. It was introduced by the in 2014 by the Government of PM Narendra Modi. The day is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Vallabhbhai Patel who had a major role in the political integration of India. The official statement for National Unity Day by the Home Ministry of India cites that the National Unity Day "will provide an opportunity to re-affirm the inherent strength and resilience of our

nation to withstand the actual and potential threats to the unity, integrity, and security of our country." We take a pledge, just as a routine ritual, which reads like this “I solemnly pledge that I dedicate myself to preserving the unity, integrity, and security of the nation and also strive hard to spread this message among my fellow countrymen. I take this pledge in the spirit of the unification of my country which was made possible by the vision and actions of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. I also solemnly resolve to make my own contribution to ensure the internal security of my country.”

Sardar Patel was a great leader of India. There are no two opinions about this. The objectives of the National Unity Day are lofty and important for the very existence of India that is Bharat. But the sad aspect of all this is that those who did not like or own Sardar Patel because of his stern views and actions on communal outfits are playing divisive politics criticizing PM Jawaharlal Nehru and Congress Party exactly working against the very ideals of ‘preserving the unity, integrity and security of the nation’, to my mind. These political stunts on these important National Days must stop forthwith, if we are really interested in remembering great leaders like Sardar Patel.

Yet another sad aspect of the day is – PM Indira Gandhi was also murdered on 31 October 1984. She was assassinated by two of her bodyguards, both of whom were Sikh fundamentalists seeking retribution for the events at the Golden Temple in Amritsar in June of that fateful year. Indira Gandhi was a leader of our country and beyond by her own right. She also stood for, like Sardar Patel, unity, integrity and security of the country. It seems GOI has totally ignored her and negated her sacrifice for the very lofty

ideals of the National Unity Day. It is very unfortunate. On the other hand, the culprits of the dastardly and barbaric riots targeting the Sikh community in Delhi and elsewhere in the wake of Indira Gandhi’s assassination could not be brought to book to the satisfaction of the affected families of innocent Sikhs and the Sikh community at large by any of the Administrations after these sordid and heart ranching incidents. It was undoubtedly an uncalled for and highly condemnable retribution by the hardcore majority Hindu community against the hapless and innocent Sikh minority. Unfortunately, the political vested interests projected these inhuman any bastardly, I am sorry to use this uncivilized word, incidents as the doing of the Congress leaders to avenge Indira Gandhi’s murder. It amounted to willful twisting of the facts by the vested interests. Most of us are not ready to call spade a spade because of the ill-conceived notion of so called communal unity. The Sikh community must get justice for the riots of 1984 under law of the land. Why Indira Gandhi, a nationalist of the highest order, should be ignored, on her Punia Teethi, October 31 – Martyrdom; which we celebrate as the National Unity Day? Is it not hypocrisy? While I greet my fellow Indians on the National Unity Day, the birth day of Sardar Patel, I also remember, with reverence, Indira Gandhi, the worthy daughter of India.

Mera Rona Nahi, Rona Hai Ye Sare Gulistan Ka
Woh Gul Hon Main, Khazan Har Gul Ki Hai Goya Khazan Meri

(This is not only my wailing, but is that of the entire garden
I am a rose, to me every rose’ autumn is my autumn)

Hindutava Agenda – Subtly at Work   - The other day, GOI has released its draft National Labour Policy, 2025 – Rashtriya Sharam Shakti Nitii, 2025. It hails Manusmriti. A story in the Tribune of October 30 says that Manusmriti has once again entered the political battlefield, this time through the Centre’s draft Labour Policy 2025, which claims that the ancient text “embeds the moral basis of labour governance within India’s

civilisational fabric, centuries before the rise of modern labour law.” But the Opposition
has sharply objected to the government’s invocation of Manusmriti, a text long criticised for its caste-based hierarchy and exclusionary codes. The Congress leaders accused the Modi government of seeking to “replace constitutional morality with the Manusmriti’s moral order”. This return to the principles of the Manusmriti is in keeping with the RSS’s most cherished traditions. It had attacked the Constitution soon after it was adopted - on the grounds that it did not derive inspiration from the ideals and values of Manu as embodied in the Manusmriti,” posted Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on X. The new draft National Labour & Employment Policy includes elements identified by critics as Hindutva-inspired, particularly its framing of work as a "sacred and moral duty" based on ancient Hindu texts like the Manusmriti and Arthashastra. Critics argue this approach, which uses terms like "dharma" and "rajdharma," ignores modern concepts of workers' rights, fair wages, and safety and could reinforce a caste-based hierarchy by downplaying the need for legal protections in favor of a moral/religious framework, as reported by The Wire and The Telegraph.

Earlier the National Education Policy, 2020, identified potential Hindutava Elements through its emphasis on "civilisational values," promotion of Sanskrit, inclusion of philosophical concepts like those found in the Bhagavad Gita, and a nationalist narrative. While proponents frame these as fostering holistic development and traditional values, critics argue it promotes a Hindu-centric curriculum that could downplay secularism and India's multicultural history.

The Hindutava agenda of the GOI, it seems, is subtly a work. It is a matter of concern and worry as the Hindu text like Manusmriti and Ram Charit Manas are the votaries of Chatur-Varna Vivastha from which the graded inequality flows and these denigrate the women folk. The so called division of labour in the Varan Vivastha emanates not from the skill or knowledge but from birth. Where are we heading? It is a matter to ponder over.

The Bits and Pieces – As I Please – 11

The Bits and Pieces – As I Please – 11

October 27, 1951 – Ambedkar Visited Jalandhar

It was an historic day in the history of Bootan Mandi, my native place in Jalandhar when Babasaheb Ambedkar visited Jalandhar. The day is commemorated with fond memories every successive year at the site where now Ambedkar Bhawan stands at Nakodar Road. Thoughtfully, Ambedkar Bhawan’s Managing Committee observes the day, with a sense of public service, by arranging a Free Medical Camp for the benefit of the residents of the area. This year a Free Eye Checkup and Follow up was hosted in cooperation with National Eye Care Hospital of Dr. Piyush Sood and Bibi Mohinder Rattu of the UK, a staunch Ambedkarite. I myself took advantage and got my eyes checked instantly. It was a matter of satisfaction to note that a large number of men and women visited the camp to their satisfaction. It is an appreciable activity as a tribute to the greatest son of India in the contemporary times, Babasaheb Ambedkar. I take this opportunity to congratulate and thank Ambedkar Bhawan Trust and sponsors of the Free Eye Camp, Dr. Piyush Sood and Bibi Mohinder Rattu.

As regards the visit of Babasaheb in 1951, the poetic words of Gurdass Ram Alam starts echoing in my ears which he recited at the mammoth public rally – Bada Shor Painda Gariba De Dere; Aj Kaun Aya Savere Savere. Babasaheb Ambedkar delivered two important speeches during the visit which are still relevant for the polity and society of India that is Bharat – i) While speaking at the Political Rally of All India Scheduled Caste Federation at Bootan Mandi on October 27, he urged the SC communities to stand united

and ‘emphasized the need for the Dalit community to become united and self-reliant, stating that they should not have to depend on his constant presence for their upliftment. He asked the community to stand on their own legs.’ and ii) in his address to the students of Jalandhar D.A.V. College on Parliamentary Democracy in India on October28; while listing the essentials of Parliamentary Democracy he said, “What about free and fair elections? We must not lose sight of the fact that Big Business is trying to play a great part in the political life of this country. The amount that is being contributed to Congress on behalf of Big Business is a very dangerous thing. If moneyed people try to influence the elections by contributing to the election fund of any political party, what will be the result? If the party which they have supported financially comes into power, they will try to extract concessions for themselves either by modifying the present legislation or by influencing the party in power to legislate in such a manner as would be beneficial to their interests. I ask you, gentlemen, whether under these circumstances there is any hope left for the Parliamentary system of Government to do any good to the country. I would like to refer to the Mahabharata. During the battle between the Pandvas and the Kaurvas, Bhishma and Drona were on the side of the Kaurvas. The Pandvas were in the right and the Kaurvas were in the wrong. Bhishma admitted this. When somebody asked Bhishma as to why he was supporting the Kaurvas if he found the Pandvas to be in the right. Bhishma replied in the memorable sentence. I must be loyal to the salt if I eat the food of the Kaurvas. I must take their side even if they might be in the wrong.” Perhaps these visionary thoughts of Babasaheb worked as a guiding force in the Supreme Court’s recent  rejection of the ‘Election Bonds’ scheme of the GOI. Ambedkar is as relevant today as it was before –

Uthaye Kuch Waraq Lale Ne, Kuch Nargis Ne, Kuch Gul Ne
Chaman Mein Har Taraf Bikhri Huwi Hai Dastan Meri

(Some leaves were picked up by the tulip, some by the narcissus, some by the rose
My story is scattered around everywhere in the garden)

Urha Li Qumriyon Ne, Tootiyon Ne, Andleebon Ne
Chaman Walon Ne Mil Kar Loot Li Tarz-e-Faghan Meri

(The turtle‐doves, parrots, and nightingales pilfered away
The garden’s denizens jointly robbed away my plaintive way)

Quote – Unquote – India & UN

“On October 24, the United Nations reached the milestone of 80 years even as it faces an uphill task in this increasingly difficult world. The core UN Charter blueprint has been eroded, as seen in conflicts raging around the world, writes Bharat H Desai, Professor of international law at the University of Bonn, Germany, in his Op-Ed piece 80 years on, UN remains humanity’s best hope. But without the historic battles fought in the UNGA, the elimination of apartheid and the liberation of colonies would not have been possible, that is why the UN matters, he writes. The founding members of the UN like India, which is aspiring for a rightful seat on the UNSC’s horse-shoe table, must stand by the UN in its hour of existential crisis.”

The Bits and Pieces – As I Please – 10

The Bits and Pieces – As I Please – 10

Jinhe Naaz Hai Hind Pe Woh Kahan Hain? – I wrote about focused propaganda to undermine Babasaheb Ambedkar in my last blog. That smear campaign is on by the likes of Advocate Anil Misra and supported by ill-advised and anti-social elements in the main stream of the society. It is unfortunate that the Thekedars of the Hindu society are blissfully silent and doing nothing to stop this

frenzy. It is time for those who talk of so called ‘Samrasta’ to sit and think as to how to address this immoral and anti-social activity. Why have I picked this subject again? There are a couple of immediate provocations after the sordid saga of CJI B. R. Gavai and IPS Y. Puran Kumar. Today, October 22, I have come across two incidents which lowered my head as a civilized citizen of India – i) Somewhere a dalit was made to lick his own urine allegedly on his caste count and ii) in some park or a public place Muslims conducted Namaz and the caste Hindus got perturbed and washed the place with the cow urine for Shudi of the desecrated site. Where are we heading? On this path, we cannot make India that is Bharat a Vikshit Bharat but it is a sure way to harm India and its integrity. I recall the lines of a famous song of Sahir Ludhianvi –

कहां हैं, कहां है, मुहाफ़िज़ ख़ुदी के
जिन्हें नाज़ है हिन्द पर वो कहां हैं

Lokpal of India – The office of Lokpal, a statutory authority, is in the news for wrong reasons, it seems.  Lokpal is an anti-corruption authority or body of ombudsman who represents the public interest in India which was established in 2013 by an act of parliament. Before this the basic law to check corruption was the Prevention of

Corruption Act, 1988. There is no explicit provision in the constitution to deal with corruption except some provisions in the Principles of State Policy to establish the framework for a welfare state and set principles of good governance. The directive principles of state policy emphasize the importance of public service and the welfare of the people, which indirectly serve as a moral compass against corruption. The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) are government bodies that investigate corruption cases against public officials. Lokpal is a new Avatar which came into being after the campaigns of Anna Hazare, Baba Ramdev, Arvind Kejriwal among others in the early years of 2010s; precisely onwards of 2014, PM Narendra Modi’s dispensation. As of now it has been observed that Lokpal gas become Jokepal where retired judges and senior bureaucrats are parked at government expenses to reward them for cooperation and liaison with the ruling outfits. It is general perception in the general public as out of "8,703 complaints. Only 24 probes. 6 prosecution sanctions” have been handled by the so clled ‘anti-corruption watchdog as stated by Dr. Manu Singhvi  Lokpal is currently in the news for purchasing  seven luxury cars for the Lokpals at a starring cost of 5 crore each out of its Annual budget of Rs. 44.32 crore. Dr. Singhvi added, “If this is our anti-corruption

watchdog, it's more poodle than panther!" MP Priyanka Chaturvedi also lashed out at Lokpal on X, stating, "Gazab ka Jokepal at Indian taxpayers expense. Oh BMW what happened to Swadesi call by GoI?" She has a point when PM Narendra Modi pitches for Swadeshi – Vocal for Local. Is it only a slogan? I think it is time to immediately stop all imports of luxury cars for public figures and government functionaries. Our home grown brands of cars/vehicles are equally good. There is no need to import luxury cars even on the pretext of security. I hope somebody listens.

The Bits and Pieces – As I Please – 9

The Bits and Pieces – As I Please – 9

India & Afghanistan – Emerging Scenario – India and Afghanistan, Islamic Emirite of Afghanisatn, historically share civilizational links - Both nations share deep cultural, linguistic, and trade connections that date back to the Indus Valley Civilization. Emperor Ashoka's efforts to spread Buddhism also

strengthened these bonds. Afghan dynasties, such as the Ghazni and Lodhi, played a significant role in shaping the politics and culture of the Indian subcontinent. Afghanistan was the only country to oppose Pakistan's membership at the UN in 1947, highlighting early political ties with India. The relationship was officially formalized with a Treaty of Friendship signed in 1950. India was the only South Asian nation to recognize the Soviet-backed government and provided it with humanitarian aid. India supported the Northern Alliance in the 1990s and advocated for Afghanistan's membership in the SAARC in 2005. Following the Taliban's return to power, India closed its embassy but maintained a small diplomatic mission to handle humanitarian and trade issues. Despite not formally recognizing the Taliban regime, India has resumed dialogue and engagement, including reopening its embassy in Kabul as of October 2025. Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi during his recent visit assured New Delhi that the Afghan soil will not be allowed for carrying out any activities that could be detrimental to India’s interests. It seems both the partners have realized that we need to strengthen our bonds of cooperation to mutual advantage to meet the challenge of merging geo-political and security scenario in Asia and the world at large. The relationship is now focused on humanitarian aid, regional security, and ensuring stability, while navigating the challenges posed by the Taliban's policies, particularly regarding human rights. India is not and should not be interested in internal matters of Afghanistan including treatment and status of women etc. We should focus on larger issues of security, terrorism and trade and also people to people contact as ‘contiguous neighbors’ as rightly termed by EAM S. Jaishankar. I conclude this with a quote from an article in the Tribune written by its Chief Editor, Jyoti Malhotra, “Breakfast in Delhi, lunch in Amritsar-if-you-can’t-go-to-Lahore and dinner in Kabul? As Dr Manmohan Singh’s famous phrase resounds across the ether, you can imagine him having the last laugh somewhere. “Afghans are somewhat over-zealous about their honour and dignity, sometimes, misplaced too. I recall a diplomatic anecdote in this regard. In the wake of regime change in Afghanistan in mid 1970s, President Mohammad Daoud Khan sent his Special Envoy to India. The Indian side, as per the laid down protocol, arranged a call and meeting of the Special Envoy with the then EAM Swaran Singh

in the EAM’s office in South Block. Accordingly, Protocol Officer went to the Hotel of the Special Envoy to escort him to the call and meeting with the EAM. But to his surprise, the Special Envoy refused to go on the pretext that he was senior as the Special Envoy of the President of Afghanistan and as such EAM Swaran Singh should call on him. Protocol Officer immediately conveyed this diplomatic hitch to EAM. Swaran Singh, as usual on such undiplomatic irritations laughed and agreed to receive the high-profile visitor and advised the Persian Interpreter, R.A.K. Sherwani who was present in the EAM’s office to help the two leaders to interact. The cool and suave, EAM Swaran Singh graciously allowed the Special Envoy of Afghanistan to carry his misplaced ego. Diplomacy cannot be a slave of rigidity. Indian diplomacy has come full circle.

Jo Hai Pardon Mein Pinhan, Chashm-e-Beena Dekh Leti Hai
Zamane Ki Tabiyat Ka Taqaza Dekh Leti Hai

(The discerning eye sees everything covered in veils
It does see the exigencies of the nature of times)

Sinister Design to undermine Babasaheb Ambedkar – Of late, it has been observed that a sinister design to underline and negate Babasaheb Ambedkar has been started in the social media after the shameful throwing of a shoe on the CJI B. R. Gavai in the Supreme Court of India. Many Facebook accounts and posts do appear daily not only to support and eulogize Rakesh Kishore a so called Sanatani but also to target the dalit communities in general. The hardcore Manuwadis never admitted and accepted Babasaheb Ambedkar as the father of the Indian Constitution and always tried to undermine his sterling role in making the Constitution of India by invoking

the name of B.N. Rau who was an Aide/Advisor to the Constituent Assembly. That sinister campaign has again been unleashed with added alacrity. It becomes all the more worrisome when it is noticed that these biased and vested posts are shared and repeated by some known and prominent volunteers (Swayamsevaks) and cadres of  Hindu socio-political outfits. On the other hand, in retaliation, some followers of Babasaheb Ambedkar also resort to mud-slinging and term B.N. Rau as a clerk to help Babasaheb Ambedkar. It is also unfair to B.N. Rau who played his designated role in the process making of the Constitution to India. We all should desist from this exercise of twisting the history – the sooner the better.

The Bits and Pieces – As I Please – 8

The Bits and Pieces – As I Please – 8

IPS Y Puran Kumar – Apparent Abetment to Suicide – A Slap on the Face ofCaste Ridden Society – Haryana IPS senior officer, Y. Puran Kumar committed suicide the other day at their residence in Chandigarh when his wife, Amneet P. Kumar, herself a senior IAS bureaucrat was away in Japan accompanying CM Nayab Saini on an official tour.  Puran Kumar has left a well drafted and duly typed

‘Final Note’ on the painful circumstances of taking his extreme step to end the retched life he was driven to by his own senior and junior colleagues belonging to the so called high castes in the  caste-ridden social system; Manuwad. Kumars belonged to SC category on the social ladder. The Final Note of Y. Puran Kumar may be accessed at: ‘Final Note’ of Haryana IGP reveals years of professional anguish as reported by the Tribune. Accordingly,  on her return from Japan, Amneet P Kumar, wife of deceased, has submitted a complaint to the Chandigarh Police seeking the registration of an FIR against DGP Shatrujeet Kapur and Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities Act) for allegedly driving her husband to suicide. Obviously, the Final Note of Y. Puran Kumar, prima facie, is a clear proof of the sordid conduct and behavior of the people named in it. In her complaint, Amneet said, “My husband, an officer of unimpeachable integrity and extraordinary public spirit, was found dead by a gunshot at our home. While official narratives suggest suicide, my soul cries for justice as a wife witnessing years of systematic humiliation, harassment and persecution inflicted upon my husband by senior officials, including Shatrujeet Kapur, DGP, Haryana,” She further said her husband had repeatedly invoked the SC and ST Act after being “subjected to caste-based slurs, exclusion from places of worship on police premises, mental harassment, public humiliation and atrocities by senior officers”. As I am writing this, as of now, no FIR has been accepted and registered by the police authorities. The wife of late IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, Amneet P Kumar, has submitted a detailed and urgent complaint to Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Saini, pressing for immediate action following the suicide of her husband. During a meeting with the Chief Minister, the bereaved family made it clear that they are unwilling to proceed with the post-mortem or last rites of Y Puran Kumar until an FIR is filed against those named in his suicide note and the related complaint.

Where the Thekedars of the caste ridden social order are who intend to eat the cake and have it too? Where is the SC & ST Atrocities Act? Where are the opponents of Reservation and proponents of the so called ‘creamy layer’? Somebody has to give answer to these questions. The caste system of Manuwad is the biggest enemy of India. Allama Iqbal said long before –

आह! शूद्र के लिए हिन्दोस्तां गम-खाना है
दर्द-ए-इंसानी से इस बस्ती का दिल बेगाना है।

Naman to Babu Kanshi Ram – Today, October 9, is the death anniversary of the mass leader of Dalits and the Bahujan Samaj at large, Babu Kanshi Ram ( March, 1934 - October, 2007) famously addressed as Manywar or Sahib by millions and millions of his followers not only in India but also beyond and rightly so. I take this opportunity to pay my humble tributes to Babu Kanshi Ram, a leader

and savior of the rights of the underprivileged and depressed people of India on his Punia Teethi. Kanshi Ram was the flag-bearer of the mission and legacy of Babasaheb Ambedkar. Babasaheb Ambedkar did his best and succeeded in providing for the rights of the socially marginalized sections of the society in the legal and statutory edifice of the country as an intellectual face of the suffering masses against all odds. But it was Babu Kanshi Ram who translated his vision and dreams into reality through his relentless pragmatism and political acumen on the platform of BSP, a political outfit he floated on April 14, 1984 in association with the activists like Behn Mayawati, who later became his political heir, and others. BSP became a political force to reckon with in his life time and Behn Mayawati proved her mettle as CM of UP for the record four tenures under his mentorship. Though, it seems, the mass movement which Babu Kanshi Ram started with utmost toil and involvement has fizzled out as his heirs could not stick to his philosophy and self-less involvement yet Babu Kanshi Ram is relevant in the emerging political scenario in the country with his slogan in democratic set up based on One Vote – One Value and the slogan he gave – Jis Ki Jitni Sankhya Bhari; Utni Uski Hissedari. With Naman to the great leader, Kanshi Ram –

The Bits and Pieces – As I Please – 7

The Bits and Pieces – As I Please – 7

Shameful attack on CJI B. R. Gavai – In a shameful and bizarre act of hate and perfidy at the highest pedestal of justice in the Supreme Court of India targeting CJI B. R. Gavai on October 6, the culprit, Rakesh Kishore, a member of the legal fraternity himself has shown the true colour of hate mongering currently prevailing in the

country and the society at large. It is a matter of concern and worry to each and every sane Indian; particularly when this act of hate has been inflicted in the name ‘Sanatan’ – it has been reported that Advocate Rakesh Kishore shouted slogans like ‘Sanatan dharma ka apmaan, nahi sahega Hindustan (India will not tolerate insult to Sanatan Dharma)’. While the entire country is outraged on the condemnable incident as conveyed by PM Narender Modi in his personal call to CJI Gavai and his X tweet but some of the so called Sanatanis are eulogizing Rakesh Kishore, if I go by the social media hosted by the vested interests. The Thekedars of Sanatan must read the pulse of people before it is too late. Apart from PM Modi, I have seen statements of the Congress Party leadership; Malikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi,

Priyanka Gandhi, CMs of Tamil Nadu and Kerala but surprising there is no comment from the RSS leadership and senior Ministers of GOI including the Law Minister Arjun Meghwal. I was expecting the entire judiciary would stand behind CJI Gavai and all the Judges of Supreme Court unequivocally condemn Rakesh Kishore and the thinking behind his action but that has not happened. Where are we heading? Only the time would tell. I have seen a viral video of Rakesh Kishore on his shameful act. Like Nathu Ram Godse, he is not repented of what he did. It shows that it was not a spontaneous out worst but a designed message. I only wonder as to why the Supreme Court and the other authorities have decided to let Rakesh Kishore go scot free. We must be cautious.

Greetings on Maharishi Valmik Jyanti – Today, October 7, is Maharishi Valmik Jyanti. I take this opportunity to greet my fellow citizens particularly the Valmiki community, one of the most depressed and backward communities of India both socially and economically. The society has not paid much deserved attention to their plight so far. Even the enabling and empowerment provisions

made in the Constitution of India for their upliftment by Babasaheb Ambedkar have not helped as expected. In the entrenched Manuwadi establishment, the Valmiki community is condemned to to undertake and do most of the dirty jobs of Safai Karamcharis. It is a matter of great regret and concern.  Though it may not be a right occasion to raise a question which often comes to my mind about the historical fact of the matter that how come Maharishi Valmik came to become the Guru or icon of the so called Valmiki community yet I thought of sharing my curiosity to educate myself. Maharishi did not belong to the community. He, though a great saint, to my mind, apparently, did not do and write anything for the community. I would be happy to listen from any of my readers on the subject as a student of history to clear the cob-webs of my mind.

With Greetings to my Valmiki brethren on Maharishi Valmik Jyanti.

RSS - Mahatma Gandhi and Babasaheb Ambedkar

RSS - Mahatma Gandhi and Babasaheb Ambedkar

RSS, established in September, 1925, has completed its centenary on the Vijay Dashami, October 2 and the day is being celebrated throughout India and beyond both with fan-fair and solemnity by the RSS and the BJP as RSS’s Centenary Year. It is just a co-incident that the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi also falls on October 2 this
year. And another co-incident is that Babasaheb Ambedkar also floated an organization called Samata Sainik Dal (SSD) in September/October, 1927 to match the caste Hindu move. He also renounced Hinduism and embraced Buddhism on October 14 in 1956. On this important day for RSS while greeting RSS, I thought of writing something on a relevant subject: RSS – Mahatma Gandhi and Babasaheb Ambedkar as now a days RSS often quote Mahatma Gandhi and Babasaheb Ambedkar, both apparently were the bête-noire of RSS,  in pursuing their agenda sincerely or otherwise, it is difficult to know. But prime facie it seems that there was no bonhomie among them. The socio-political scenario in the country is such that it is just not possible to ignore Mahatma Gandhi and Babasaheb Ambedkar even if one wants to do that.

RSS has come a long way and by now is one of biggest and vocal organizations of not only India but also of the world. Though RSS love to call itself a cultural outfit yet its front political organization, BJP is ruling the country for the last successive 12 years under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, apart from earlier stints under PM Atal Bihar Vajpayee at New Delhi and about 25 States of India that is Bharat, the Union of States. Obviously the RSS Centenary is big

event fully supported and owned by the ruling, BJP. PM Narendra set the ball in motion by praising and supporting RSS from the ramparts of Red Fort on August 15 in his address to nation this year. PM Narendra Modi has written various articles under his hand and seal in appreciating and supporting RSS and its leadership; particularly its Sarsanghchalal, Mohan Bhagwat. GOI has issued commemorative stamps and coins to celebrate the RSS Centenary. On the other hand, the opposition parties led by the Congress Party has denounced and criticized the RSS and the BJP not only on account of ideological differences but also the role played by RSS and BJP in dividing the country on communal basis and their agenda of amending or diluting the secular and socialist credentials of the constitution of India. RSS claims to be a true nationalist organization that fought for the independence of the country from the British Rule. It undermines the Muslim minority by calling them the heirs of Mughals, the tyrant rulers who persecuted Hindus and demolished temples. On the contrary, Congress party and other opposition parties denounce and criticize RSS for the narrow nationalism and also its negative role in the freedom movement of India with particular reference to its not hoisting the national flag (Tri-colour) at the RSS Headquarters in Nagpur till early 2000s and opposing the constitution of India and it chief architect, Babasaheb Ambedkar. They held RSS responsible for the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi by one of their alleged cadre, Nathu Ram Godse. With the changing political and socio-cultural landscape of the country under the aegis of the Constitution of India, RSS, apparently, has been changing its track to suit them for carrying their agenda of Hindutava. In the process, they find it difficult to disown both Mahatma Gandhi and Babasaheb Ambedkar.  Their

mentors like Veer Savarkar and Guru Golwalkar were dead against the mission and thought of both Gandhi and Ambedkar. RSS has started, of late, to embrace Mahatma Gandhi consciously but selectively as Father of the Nation’ and Babasaheb Ambedkar as Father of the Indian Constitution. RSS’s media mouthpieces and intellectual machinery burn mid-night oil to read and study Gandhi and Ambedkar to find something or the other which may be projected as their support and endorsement of RSS and its agenda. But somehow it is not cutting much ice, as of now. It is increasingly becoming a controversial issue.

As regards RSS and Mahatma Gandhi, of course, Gandhi met RSS leadership as and when required particularly in the run up to getting independence from the British rule and avoiding partition of the country and also maintaining communal harmony between the Hindus and Muslims. But there was hardly any meeting of minds as RSS believed in monolithic nationalism as against Gandhi’s patriotic approach. Mahatma Gandhi described the Sangh as a "communal
body with a totalitarian outlook" as described by Jai Ram Ramesh of Congress Party. The renowned historian and columnist, Ramchandra Guha has clearly brought out these differences in one of his articles in the Independent. I quote from his article, “While Gandhi was ambivalent about the RSS, the Sangh, for its part, deeply distrusted him. In early September 1947, the Mahatma had gone on fast in Calcutta, seeking to stop the violence between Hindus and Muslims. His attempts at peace-making were mocked in an article in the RSS’s magazine, Organizer. ‘Nero fiddled when Rome burnt’, the Organizer remarked: ‘History is repeating itself before our very eyes. From Calcutta Mahatma Gandhi is praising Islam and crying Allah-o-Akbar and enjoining Hindus to do the same, while in the Punjab and elsewhere most heinous and shameless barbarities and brutalities are being perpetrated in the name of Islam and under the cry of Allah-o-Akbar”. Guha further wrote, “Golwalkar had once told Gandhi that the Sangh was ‘enemy to no man’. That, characteristically, was a lie. His book Bunch of Thoughts had explicitly identified three internal enemies of the nation, that allegedly posed a great menace to national security. These were identified by the RSS chief as Muslims, Christians and Communists respectively. Twenty years after Partition, Golwalkar remained extremely paranoid about Indian Muslims, speaking (without evidence) of their being countless ‘Miniature Pakistans’ all over India”. Guha is categorical in his assertions on RSS and Mahatma Gandhi, “The seventeenth-century French writer La Rochefoucald famously defined hypocrisy as ‘the tribute that vice pays to virtue‘. On October 2nd, Indians will find this maxim vividly and variously illustrated, as RSS pracharaks from the Prime Minister downwards shall line up to pay tribute to a man the RSS vilified in his lifetime, and for whom—despite all their in public—they still have deep reservations, since he lived (and died) in the belief that India was not a Hindu country but belonged equally to people of all faiths.”

I leave it here and move on to my next prop, RSS and Babasaheb Ambedkar. There is nothing common or complementary between Babasaheb Ambedkar and RSS both with regard to polity and society. Babasaheb Ambedkar was not only social reformer but also a political player of the highest caliber. He was a man of vision with an open mind. In the process of exercise of owning Ambedkar and his legacy, RSS often quote his visit to RSS Sakha sometime in 1940. RSS claimed that in his address, Dr. Ambedkar said, "Although there are differences over certain issues, I look at the Sangh with a sense of affinity." It meant nothing and only showed that Babasaheb was a gentleman to the core of his heart and he said this with all humility and courtesy towars his hosts that RSS. I take the liberty of taking shelter under a well written piece on the issue by one of my senior acquaintances, S.R. Darapuri, a retired IPS and ADGP of UP. With regard to the RSS brand of nationalism, he said, “Dr. Ambedkar never supported the RSS brand Hindu nationalism. His nationalism was based on the concept of liberty, equality and fraternity of all citizens but the ideology of RSS is quite the opposite. He was against nationalism based on any kind of racial and religious discrimination. He had said, “Some people say that they are Hindu, Muslim or Sikh first and then Indian. But I am an Indian from beginning to end.” Ambedkar never subscribed to communal and divisive tendencies which S.R. Darapuri has explained as, “Dr. Ambedkar was not in favour of a sectarian but a secular nation. Dr. Ambedkar was opposed to the entry of religion into politics. He considered religion to be a private belief and was in favour of keeping it away from the affairs of the state. Coming to the eradication of untouchability, the approaches of RSS and Ambedkar are opposed to each other as S.R. Darapuri said, “When I look at the problem of untouchables, I think it is deeply related to the question of reorganization of Hindu society. If untouchables are to be a part of Hindu society, it is not enough to remove untouchability, for that you have to destroy Chaturvarnya.” Similarly on caste discrimination, RSS adheres to the status quo whereas Ambedkar stood for total reform and transformation as, “ Sangh and Ambedkar have completely different views on the issue of eradicating caste discrimination. Babasaheb was in favour of caste annihilation whereas the Sangh is in favour of caste harmony (as the status quo) and not the destruction of castes. Sangh considers Manusmriti as the holy book of Hindus whereas Babasaheb considered it to be a very anti-Dalit book.” One of the important and topical issues which RSS often love to raise is Hindu Rashtra. On this also the learned analyst Darapuri said, “Sangh is wholeheartedly engaged in the establishment of Hindu Rashtra through Hindutva (Hindu political ideology) while maintaining the caste system whereas Babasaheb was staunchly opposed to the establishment of Hindu Rashtra. In fact, Dr. Ambedkar came to the conclusion in 1940 that “if Hindu Raj becomes a reality, it will undoubtedly be the greatest calamity for this country… [it] will be a threat for liberty, equality and fraternity. Accordingly, it is incompatible with democracy. Hindu Raj should be stopped at any cost.”  Last one but not the least is the issue of Indian culture, Darapuri Sahib has explained it, “There is no doubt that Babasaheb had full faith in Indian culture but that culture is totally different from the culture defined by RSS. RSS defines Indian culture as Hindu culture whereas Indian culture is a mixture of different cultures. In this, there is a set of cultures like Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, Sikh, Christian, Parsi etc. RSS considers Hindu culture to be superior to other cultures.”

All said and done, BJP and its ideological parent Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has come a long way from comparing India's first law minister and father of the Indian constitution, Babasaheb Ambedkar to a 'Lilliput' in 1950.  RSS’s Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat and PM Narendra Modi have a complete change of heart, apparently, with regard to Mahatma Gandhi, Father of the Nation and Babasaheb Ambedkar, Father of the Constitution of India, if we go by the recent statements of these two most important and highly placed leaders of the country. Let us take them on their face value to avoid any negative fallout as projected by the opponents. RSS, to my mind, is a powerful outfit with a total wherewithal to take the caravan of India forward in the years to come, if they really intend to

do that. For this RSS has to change and transform its social and communal outlook with regard to the Dalits and Muslims. On the other hand, the opponents of RSS should stop harping on negative aspects of RSS’s role in the freedom movement. I personally support and endorse the Samarasta agenda of RSS but it should come out of the cozy drawing rooms and reach the masses. For this the first requisite is to discard and abandon Manuwadi thinking.

I could have written more as to what is the way forward but decided to stop here as the blog has come lengthy because of the quotes from Ramchandra Guha and S.R. Darapuri with whom I tend to agree on most of the points. I will pick up threads again and would write soon – Decoding RSS and its Sarsanghchalak, Mohan Bhagwat with particular reference to their journey from the Bunch of Thoughts to the RSS Centenary in 1925.
